Murry Peeters’ “Woman Meets Girl” to World Premiere at Toronto Black Film Festival & Queer Screen’s 30th Mardi Gras Fest in Sydney.

TORONTO, ON (January 30, 2023)— Process Entertainment is pleased to announce that Woman Meets Girl, written, directed & executive produced by Murry Peeters and starring and produced by Enuka Okuma (Workin’ Moms, Rookie Blue), will premiere at the Toronto Black Film Festival and Queer Screen’s 30th Mardi Gras Film Festival on February 18, 2023. The short film is an emotionally charged Queer story about the unlikely connection between two seemingly opposite protagonists. Okuma stars as quiet and introverted Annabelle, alongside the wild and daring Tessie, played by Chelsea Russell (SkyMed, See), who recently received accolades for her performance in TO Live and Soulpepper Theatre’s ‘da Kink in My Hair.

“Having set and shot the film in Toronto, we’re excited to be screening it for the first time, to a hometown audience,” says writer-director, Murry Peeters. “And we can’t wait for our film to premiere at one of the top five queer film festivals in the world! I really hope the film and the story resonate with people.”

Over a vodka-fueled game of Never Have I Ever, Annabelle, a 42-year-old virgin and Tessie, an 18-year-old homeless sex worker, challenge each other to expose their vulnerabilities, revealing their differences and similarities. Through the night, an undeniable chemistry emerges between them.

Okuma is “thrilled to finally share the short, though it’s a small piece of the bigger picture. We can’t wait to expand Annabelle and Tessie’s story with Murry’s incredible feature film script. This is just the beginning.”

Woman Meets Girl is written and directed by Murry Peeters (See, Maid), is produced by Okuma, Adria Budd-Johnson (Reboot), Joe Gasparik (The Drum Doctor) and Executive Producers Anthony Q. Farrell (Shelved, Run the Burbs) and Aine Rock (Ctrl Alt Delete), with cinematography by Stuart Campbell (Mayor of Kingstown, The Handmaid’s Tale). The project was made possible through the support of the CFC/Slaight Family Canadian Music Fund, CFC/Netflix Calling Card Accelerator, the Toronto Arts Council and Seed & Spark.

The 11th Edition of the Toronto Black Film Festival takes place from February 15th – 20th, 2023. The Toronto Black Film Festival is dedicated to giving unique voices in cinema the opportunity to present audiences with new ways of looking at the world.

Woman Meets Girl will be screening as part of “Women Loving Women Shorts” on Saturday, February 18th as a part of Queer Screen’s 30th Mardi Gras Film Festival in Sydney, which is one of Australia’s largest film festivals of any kind, and one of the top five queer film festivals in the world.
