Background:
About the Orchestra: Founded more than 40 years ago, the Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra’s mandate is to offer high-quality, affordable orchestra and chamber ensemble concerts to the Scarborough community at large and to support Canadian composers, new generation artists, music students, and the local musical/artistic communities of Scarborough. Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Ronald Royer.
About the Odin Quartet :
Passionate about chamber music, the Toronto-based Odin Quartet represents the diversity and the promise of youth in Canada. Since 2015, the ensemble has been dedicated to making classical music accessible to new generations of listeners, by promoting modern Canadian compositions, including those of cellist Samuel Bisson, alongside classical music literature.
In June 2015, the Odin Quartet took part in the Luminato Festival’s epic production of R Murray Schafer’s 1980 oratorio Apocalypsis. Other festival appearances include the University of Toronto’s New Music Festival, Midday Music with Shigeru, the Ottawa Valley Music Festival, Guelph Connections, and Music Mondays Toronto.
The Odin Quartet has enjoyed multiple collaborations with the Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra as its ensemble-in-residence since 2018; The Quartet has recorded numerous film scores both locally and internationally and is regularly featured in musical projects by other Toronto artists.
About the New Generation Composer Program:
Now in its seventh year, SPO’s New Generation Composer Program has given year long mentorship and training opportunities to scores of emerging professional composers. Participants compose short works for chamber ensemble (varies by season) including working sessions with musicians. The program culminates with performance and recording of successfully completed works. Additionally, SPO offers a film composition program in partnership with Sheridan Colleges Animation Program. The New Generation program is made possible through the financial support of the Telus Foundation, RBC Foundation’s Emerging Artist program and the SOCAN Foundation.
