Hamilton: (25 June, 2017) Over 500 Hamilton Malayalee Samajam (HMS) members and their families gathered on the 17th of June to celebrate Canada’s 150th Anniversary, organizing a street food festival they call “Thattukada”. HMS comprise mainly of immigrants or descendants of immigrants from India’s southern state of Kerala. Malayalee have a vibrant history in Hamilton dating back to the early 60s. Over the decades HMS and its members have integrated well into all walks of Canadian society, while assiduously retaining their cultural connections to Kerala.

Attendees at Thattukada enjoyed a variety of mouth watering Keralite street food, all prepared on the spot by an enthusiastic lineup of volunteers dressed in their traditional lungis and sarees.

Guests were thrilled at the opportunity to partake in an authentic Malayalee experience. This year the guests list involved local member of parliament David Sweet and Ontario opposition leader Patrick Brown.

VIDEO REPORT:

Mr. Brown, who has travelled to Kerala on multiple occasions, kicked off the celebrations with a speech peppered with anecdotes from his travels in Kerala.

Celebrations continued late into the evening with various cultural programmes and a magic show for kids.
