ProArteDanza presents Season 2018 featuring the World Premiere of Figaro 2.0 co-choreographed by ProArteDanza’s award-winning duo Artistic Director Roberto Campanella and Artistic Associate Robert Glumbek
(Toronto, October 5, 2018) : ProArteDanza has been dazzling Canadian audiences with its signature, full-throttle physicality and emotionally resonant contemporary ballet performances since 2004. Season 2018 features the world premiere of Figaro 2.0, a full-evening dance work co-choreographed by the company’s award-winning duo: Artistic Director Roberto Campanella and Artistic Associate Robert Glumbek. Figaro 2.0 runs at Harbourfront Centre’s Fleck Dance Theatre in Toronto from Thursday November 1 – Saturday November 10.
Figaro 2.0 draws inspiration from the wit and drama of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro with a contemporary focus that explores the battle of the sexes, infidelity and, ultimately, the human condition – with some surprising twists from the original story along the way.
This striking evening is performed by an ensemble of some of Toronto’s most accomplished dancers: Robert Glumbek (Bartolo), Benjamin Landsberg (Figaro), Ryan Lee (Marcellina), Daniel McArthur (Count), Victoria Mehaffey (Suzanna), Kelly Shaw (Countess), Taylor Bojanowski (Chorus), Heidi Lorenz (Chorus), Jake Poloz (Chorus).
Set and costumes are by Yannik Larivée, lighting by Arun Srinivasan, and dramaturgy by John Ottmann. Music is by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with select new transitional compositions by Greg Harrison.
Founded in 2004 by renowned choreographer and former National Ballet of Canada soloist Roberto Campanella, and former National Ballet of Canada dancer Joanna Ivey, ProArteDanza is a unique and visionary contemporary dance company created to showcase the best choreographers and dancers from both ballet and modern dance backgrounds. With Artistic Associate Robert Glumbek, ProArteDanza creates, presents and commissions work that adheres to the guiding principle of “passion in performance.”
Campanella and Glumbek’s 2010 co-creation …in between… won the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Choreography. Campanella is also the recipient of a 2018 RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrant award. As well, for over 14 years, he has been choreographing for TV and film for shows such as Silent Hill, Star Trek-Discovery and The Strain, among others. Notably, he was the choreographer for the four-time Oscar-winning movie The Shape of Water, for which he was recently awarded the Empire Community Award from the Italian Contemporary Film Festival.
Says the Globe and Mail, “ProArteDanza is arguably the best small-scale contemporary ballet company in Canada. The dancers are strong and the choreography is compelling… The audience’s adoration is palpable.”
